Introduction to Chess

Everyone knows what chess is, but not everyone knows how to play.  If you've ever wanted to learn how to play, get better, or just find out how chess relates to life (it's not just a game!), then this is the class for you.

Returning for the fourth consecutive semester, FianCHESSo's Introduction to Chess DeCal is 2 hrs, once per week, of chess designed for beginning to intermediate players. (Those interested in the advanced section should e-mail coursedirector@fianchesso.org.) The first hour involves a discussion-style lecture from ranked instructors, and the second hour is dedicated to playing chess with your classmates.

7 weeks of chess tactics/strategies

7 weeks of other chess-related themes (variations, puzzles, etc)

Attending one the first two classes is essential to getting into the course. Note that this DeCal starts quite early, on January 29th, 2008 at 225 Dwinelle.

*** The location of 225 Dwinelle is tentative.  Go there for the first session, but after that we might change location.  We'll also post a notice online here and on the door of 225 Dwinelle if we change location, so you don't need to email us for confirmation.
